A Sunrise in Croatia: Loznati, Isle of Cres

Kellie-Netherwood-2704

A sunrise used to be something I accidentally stumbled across when it presented itself at the end of a really great party!  But as photography becomes increasingly imbedded in my life, I find myself often setting my alarm for an early rise.

And I almost never regret it whilst travelling.

There is something special about the first few hours of the day.  Wildlife is often more active, landscapes feel unspoiled and urban locations more authentic.  The beginning of the day feels fresh, it is energising and it is invigorating.

And every now and then, the first light of the day rewards early risers with the type of sunrise I experienced on the Isle of Cres in Croatia a couple of weeks ago.

As we made our way from Cres Town towards a location that would provide us with a picturesque view of the village of Loznati, it was unclear if our efforts would be rewarded.  The hint of colour that was appearing in the sky was threatened by clouds approaching from the other direction.

But nature plays by it’s own rules and the game can change within seconds.

As the sun rose, I felt like I was looking at a TV screen with a remote control that changed the view from one set of hue colours to another.

As we reluctantly accepted the sun had arrived and the day was ready to begin, we crossed the road and climbed a small rise, keen to check out a different viewpoint and hang on to every last minute of the morning.  And again, our efforts were rewarded with an unexpected extension to the changing colours of the morning.

It was a simple moment of magic and a reminder of why I crave beautiful locations such as these.

  3. Simply beautiful pictures. Sunrise can be such a beautiful and optimistic time of day. I love the stillness as the world slowly wakes.

  4. Some great shots, looks like a fantastic sunrise! You’ve managed to capture the colours very well making for some great compositions.

  5. Sorry to be so late to comment but my, how beautiful the sunrise. I know just what you mean about the serenity and freshness of a new dawn. I had to go to work extra early last week and was rewarded with similar hues as I drove east.

    • It really is the best time of day isn’t it! I imagine I’d be too distracted if I was driving through a beautiful sunrise though – I’d be late for work, wanting to keep stopping to photograph it!!

  6. Croatia is still on my future destination list. Watching your wonderful photos I am even more convinced that I want to get there someday. It seems an amazing place.
