Highlights of Iceland: Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon

Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon was the location of my first ever iceberg sighting. I still remember that “wow factor” moment that overshadowed the waterfalls, geysers, black sand beaches, glacial mountains and volcanic landscape that had already convinced me Iceland was one of the most beautiful places in the world.

But that was nearly three years ago and before I’d visited Antarctica and the Arctic. Had my adventures in the Polar Regions destroyed my Jokulsarlon wow factor?

The ends of the earth may be overwhelmingly vast, remote and spectacular, but as I set my eyes on Jokulsarlon on my return trip to Iceland last month, I realised it will always be my favourite part of the country.

Is it because the changeable and magical light makes it a photographer’s playground? Is it the symphony of crackling ice, swimming seals or chirping birds? Is it the pastel hues of sunrise, the fiery and explosive sunsets and aurora filled nights? Is it the procession of icebergs from the glacier they broke away from to their freedom in the sea? It is the surreal sight of ice on the beach, pushed back by the waves and rejected by the ocean?

It’s all of the above and more, a true highlight of Iceland.
