Postcards from New Zealand’s South Island

New Zealand’s spectacular landscape and outdoor attractions have been calling out to photographers, hikers, naturalists and adventurers for decades.  And since the immortalisation of these natural highlights in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, more and more travellers have been heading south to experience it for themselves.

Earlier this year I finally joined them and discovered what the locals have always known: that New Zealand is one of the most beautiful locations in the world.

My three week self-drive through the South Island introduced me to dramatic scenery, interesting wildlife, star-filled skies, energising hikes, a relaxed culture and friendly locals.  And despite its popularity as a tourist destination, I enjoyed many locations in energising solitude.

I was rewarded with endless photography opportunities with postcard perfect scenes at every turn.

Here is just a small taste of what New Zealand’s beautiful and spectacular South Island has to offer.
