Indonesia in Pictures: People of Ubud, Bali

With its striking and contrasting landscape of rice paddies, volcanic mountains and tropical beaches, Bali is an island full of postcard-perfect opportunities for travellers interested in hiking and water-sports, vibrant bars and laid-back cafes, lively markets, luxurious spas, temples and religious festivals, yoga, meditation and more.

For this reason it attracts travellers of varying ages, budgets and interests. But there is one thing most of them will agree on when they leave – that one of the highlights of a visit to Bali is the friendliness of the local people.

And although my first visit to Bali was limited to a weekend of three nights and two days, I agreed – the kind-natured and welcoming Balinese people was one of the most memorable features of my trip and the reason I hope to return to explore more of Bali with more time on my hands.

My first visit to Bali took me to Ubud, where I enjoyed a weekend break from a work project that had me based temporarily in Singapore. To maximise photographic opportunities in the limited time I had on the island, I joined local photographer Nyoman (booked through Taksu Photography Tours) for a day exploring Ubud and it’s surroundings. Visits to a local market, Titra Empul Temple (the Holy Water Temple visited by locals looking for spiritual purification), a countryside alive with harvesting activities and meeting Nyoman’s family, created great opportunities to capture the smiling faces and friendly character of the welcoming locals.

  1. What a wonderful post and fab photos of Ubud. I have been there in 2015 for the first time, and after the initial disorientation, I started exploring the place and savoring its richness and its beauty which unfolded day by day. People are simply amazing, good natured and so kind. I think Ubud is the real Bali and if I go back I will definitely stay there and explore more of the northern part. Thanks for sharing! 🙂

    • Thanks for your comment – I think you’ve summed up Ubud perfectly and is the same reason why I hope to return one day with more time up my sleeve to explore it further. Happy travels 🙂
