Winning a Wanderlust Travel Award

I recently attended the Wanderlust 2013 Travel Awards and was both excited and flattered to be announced the winner of the Most Popular Travel Blog category for my post “15 Tips for Responsible Travel in Myanmar”.

Wanderlust prides itself on being an independent, multi-award winning, leading magazine for adventurous and authentic travel.  It compliments its magazine with a website that continues to increase in popularity, providing a vast array of resources and a forum for both experienced and new travellers.  Each year Wanderlust invites its readers to rate their travels from the past year in categories such as Top Emerging Destination, Top Airline, Top Guide Book and many more.

I have set foot on seven continents, travelled to more than fifty countries and continue to rate Myanmar as one of my favourite destinations after my visit there in 2010.  So it was no surprise to me that it was voted Top Country by the Wanderlust readers this year.

Whenever anyone asks me ‘should I visit Myanmar’ I instantly respond with ‘yes, it is amazing, you won’t regret it’.  But I also follow up with a request.  I ask them to take a moment to remember that tourism has the ability to both enhance and destroy a culture.  I remind them that they are part of a generation that has the opportunity to shape the impact increased tourism has on Myanmar.

If you are planning to visit Myanmar, take a moment to read the tips I offer to ensure you get the most your experience.  If you have been to Myanmar in the past couple of years and have updated advice, please share it in the comments section of my ‘tips’ post, I’d be very interested to hear how things may have changed.

Attending the Wanderlust Awards was a great opportunity to put faces to the names of some of the magazine’s staff as well as meet the other award winners. You can check them out on the Wanderlust website here.

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank Wanderlust.  Not only for the award that I am very proud of, but for providing a forum for like-minded travellers to share experiences, ideas and to support each other’s dream of exploring this incredible world we live in.

Here’s to 2013:  the year of embracing the freedom we are so fortunate to have,  soaking up the moment we are in and making our travel dreams reality.
